The coastal run to Kolkata, north through Bengal to Siliguri, then NH-10 up the Teesta river gorge — landslide country in the monsoon — climbing to Gangtok at 1,650 metres.
The Teesta gorge road is the variable here: spectacular, narrow, and closed by slides often enough that we check its status the evening before the final leg and hold a Siliguri fallback plan. Siliguri itself is the route’s anchor — the last big hospitals before the hills. Altitude at Gangtok is modest but real for cardiac patients; the treating doctor’s view is part of our route plan.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if the NH-10 gorge road is closed?
We know before we commit — road status is checked the previous evening and again at Siliguri. If closed, the patient holds at Siliguri with hospital cover until it reopens, or the family opts for the alternate alignment; nobody waits in a gorge queue with a patient aboard.
How long does an ambulance take from Hyderabad to Gangtok?
About 2.5 days (staged) hours for the 2050 km via NH-16 → Kolkata → NH-12/NH-27 → Siliguri → NH-10 Teesta gorge, including patient halts. Ambulances drive steadily for the patient’s comfort — a private car’s time is not the right benchmark.
Can a critical patient travel from Hyderabad to Gangtok by road?
Usually yes, with the right configuration: ICU vehicle, matching crew, oxygen with deep reserve, and en-route hospitals marked. The treating doctor’s travel clearance is the starting point — we screen every case honestly and advise if rail or air would serve better.
