Moving a patient who cannot breathe unaided is the most technically demanding transfer in ambulance work. A ventilator ambulance carries a transport ventilator, backup oxygen far in excess of the expected journey time, and a crew practised in managing an airway on the move.
The critical part happens before the wheels turn: our crew matches the transport ventilator to the settings the patient is already on in the ICU, observes the patient on the transport circuit for several minutes, and only then begins the shift. On outstation routes we also plan where en-route hospitals with ICU capability are located, so there is always a fallback within reach.

How we plan it
Oxygen mathematics decides these transfers. We calculate consumption from the patient’s minute volume and FiO2, then carry at least double the requirement for the planned journey time. That margin is what covers a traffic jam on the ORR or a slow ghat section on an interstate route.
Frequently asked questions
Can you move a patient who is fully ventilator-dependent?
Yes. The transport ventilator is set to match the ICU ventilator’s settings, and the patient is observed on the transport circuit before departure. A critical-care attendant manages the airway throughout.
How much oxygen do you carry?
We size oxygen to the route: calculated consumption for the journey, then at least a 100% reserve on top. For long interstate transfers this means multiple large cylinders secured in the vehicle.
What if the ventilator fails mid-journey?
The crew carries a bag-valve-mask and is trained to ventilate manually while the issue is resolved or the vehicle diverts to the nearest hospital. Backup battery and power inverters cover electrical failures.
Do ventilator patients need a doctor on board?
It depends on stability. Many tracheostomised, stable patients travel safely with a critical-care attendant. For unstable patients or complex drips, we recommend and can arrange an accompanying doctor.
