Every ambulance journey has a version of the same bag. Pack it once, properly, and the journey — whether across Hyderabad or across the country — runs smoother. Print this list and tick it before the vehicle arrives.
Documents
- Discharge/transfer summary and referral note
- Recent investigations, imaging and reports
- Prescription and medication chart
- Patient ID (Aadhaar or equivalent) and insurance/scheme cards
- Receiving hospital details and contact person
- Two photocopy sets of everything
Medicines and medical items
- All current medicines in original strips — 48 hours extra
- Insulin/refrigerated items in a small icebox (tell the crew)
- Inhalers, drops, ointments in use
- The patient’s own BP monitor or glucometer if they use one
- Any prescribed nutritional feeds with flush water
Personal and comfort items
- Loose cotton clothing in layers; a light blanket
- Adult diapers, wipes, hygiene kit
- Spectacles, hearing aids, dentures — in the hand bag, never the luggage
- Phone and charger; a power bank for long routes
- Light doctor-approved food and drinking water
- A familiar pillow or shawl for long journeys
For the accompanying family member
- Your own water, food and medicines — you matter too
- Cash for tolls-adjacent purchases and small needs
- A notebook with key phone numbers written down (phones die)
- Patience: the vehicle moves at the patient’s pace, not the traffic’s
One deliberate omission from this list: valuables. Jewellery and large cash create worry in hospitals and on highways alike. Send them separately with family.
