Emergency Preparedness for Hyderabad Families: A One-Hour Setup

Emergency Care · July 19, 2026

In a medical emergency, families lose minutes to the same three things: finding numbers, finding documents, and deciding where to go. All three are solvable this afternoon, in about an hour.

Minute 0–15: The numbers

Save these in every family phone, spelled to sort together (e.g., ‘AAA Ambulance’, ‘AAA Doctor’): the government 108 service, a private ambulance service you have vetted, your family doctor, the nearest two hospitals’ emergency desks, and one neighbour who is usually home. Write the same list on paper stuck inside a kitchen cupboard — phones die and children forget PINs.

Minute 15–35: The medical file

One folder per family member who is elderly or has a condition: current prescriptions, last discharge summary, allergy list, insurance cards, and a one-page sheet stating conditions, medicines and doctor names in large print. In an emergency, this folder rides with the patient and answers every intake question while you park the car.

Minute 35–50: The decision, pre-made

Decide now, calmly, where each family member goes for what: which hospital for cardiac symptoms, which for the children, which accepts your insurance cashlessly. Hyderabad’s hospital clusters — Banjara/Somajiguda for the centre, Secunderabad for the north, LB Nagar for the east, Gachibowli for the west — mean the answer differs by where you live. A pre-made decision saves the worst five minutes of any emergency: the argument at the door.

Minute 50–60: The house walk

Walk your home as a stretcher crew would: which door, which stairs, does the lift take a stretcher, where does the vehicle stop? If you live in a gated community, learn the gate protocol for ambulances at night. Tell the watchman’s shift that in an emergency, the gate opens first and questions come second.

Revisit the setup twice a year — prescriptions change, hospitals change. The families who handle emergencies well are not braver; they are prepared.
