Heatwave Health Emergencies: Recognising and Responding

Seasonal · July 19, 2026

Summer across Telangana and the Deccan is a medical season of its own. When April and May push past 42°C, emergency lines fill with collapsed outdoor workers, dizzy elders and feverish children — most of it preventable, all of it time-sensitive once it starts.

Exhaustion versus stroke: the line that matters

Heat exhaustion looks like heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, cramps — the body still fighting. Heat stroke is the fight lost: hot dry skin (sweating may stop), confusion, staggering, temperature above 40°C, collapse or fits. Exhaustion is treated where you stand; stroke is a call-the-ambulance-now emergency where every minute of high body temperature cooks organs.

First response while help comes

Who to watch in your own house

The classic heat victims are the elderly (blunted thirst, heart medications that impair heat handling), infants, outdoor workers on deadlines, and anyone with heart or kidney disease. The classic setting is the airless afternoon room of a person who ‘didn’t want to bother anyone.’ Summer caregiving means scheduled water, checked rooms, and errands shifted to mornings.

Patient transport in the heat

Summer transfers get planned around the sun: early-morning departures for long routes, pre-cooled vehicle cabins, extra water aboard, and for heat-vulnerable patients, saturation and temperature checks at halts. A vehicle’s AC failing at 2 pm in May is a clinical event, not a comfort complaint — which is why summer maintenance discipline is a fair question to ask any operator you book.
