How to Prepare a Patient for Long-Distance Ambulance Travel

A long ambulance journey is easier when the practical details are sorted before departure.

By Sri Loukya Ambulance Service · Updated · General information, not medical advice

Documents

  • Discharge summary or transfer letter
  • Prescriptions and medication chart
  • Recent investigation reports
  • Identity documents for patient and family

Medication and feeding

List every medication due during the journey with times and doses. Carry a spare day's supply. If the patient is tube-fed or on a special diet, plan feeds around the journey and carry what is needed.

Comfort

Long hours on a stretcher are tiring. Carry a light blanket, a pillow if helpful, and any personal items that comfort the patient. Tell the crew about pressure areas or pain.

For family members

Carry water, light food, phone chargers and cash for tolls or small expenses. Agree who will receive the patient at the destination.
