ICU Ambulance vs Normal Ambulance: What's the Difference?
Families are often asked whether they need an ICU ambulance or a 'normal' one. The answer depends entirely on the patient's condition.

Basic (BLS) ambulance
Used for stable patients who need to lie down or be moved on a stretcher but do not need close monitoring or critical-care support. Typical uses include discharge journeys, planned hospital visits and transfers of stable patients.
ICU ambulance
Used for patients who need closer monitoring and critical-care support during transport, with crew trained accordingly. Typical uses include hospital-to-hospital transfers of seriously ill patients.
Who decides?
The treating doctor. The same patient might need an ICU ambulance for one journey and a basic ambulance weeks later as they recover. Share the doctor's advice when booking.
Why cost shouldn't decide alone
An ICU ambulance costs more because of the equipment and crew involved. Choosing a lower level of care than the patient needs to save money can put the patient at risk; choosing a higher level than needed is unnecessary. Follow the medical advice.
