The corridor

The full NH-44 run to Chandigarh, then the NH-5 climb through Solan and the pine switchbacks into Shimla at 2,200 metres.

Shimla adds two things our plains routes never face: altitude and switchbacks. The Chandigarh–Shimla leg is only 115 km but takes four hours with a patient — we slow through every hairpin, and for cardiac and respiratory patients we discuss the altitude question with the treating doctor before confirming, since oxygen needs can rise with elevation. A Chandigarh halt with hospital cover is standard before the climb.

Hospitals along the way

For serious patients, the route plan marks capable hospitals en route — the fallback that makes long transfers safe:

Frequently asked questions

Can oxygen-dependent patients travel by road to Shimla?

With planning, yes — altitude raises oxygen demand, so we size cylinders beyond the plains calculation and confirm the plan with the treating doctor. For fragile respiratory cases we honestly discuss whether Chandigarh, at the foot of the hills, is the wiser handover point.

How long does an ambulance take from Hyderabad to Shimla?

About 36–42 hours for the 1900 km via NH-44 → Chandigarh → NH-5 hill highway, including patient halts. Ambulances drive steadily for the patient’s comfort — a private car’s time is not the right benchmark.

Can a critical patient travel from Hyderabad to Shimla by road?

Usually yes, with the right configuration: ICU vehicle, matching crew, oxygen with deep reserve, and en-route hospitals marked. The treating doctor’s travel clearance is the starting point — we screen every case honestly and advise if rail or air would serve better.

How do we get a quotation for this route?

Call +91 99210 86108 or send an enquiry with the patient’s condition and pickup details. We confirm the configuration and provide a written quotation before dispatch.
